SCHEDULES:

Classes are offered throughout the year at the San Francisco General Hospital. These support group classes meet for six weeks after an initial orientation meeting, where potential participants can learn about the program and if now is the right time for them to quit.

We also offer monthly relapse prevention classes for those who have completed our smoking cessation program and are currently smoke-free. The purpose of the class is to provide support and encouragement during the first few months after quitting.

Our class schedules can be viewed and printed using Adobe Reader software.

Description Of Classes In a supportive and non-judgmental setting, participants learn how nicotine affects the body and causes a person to become dependent on it. Participants learn about their individual smoking patterns, investigate alternative behaviors for the smoking habit, discuss and role-play situations that trigger smoking behavior and develop techniques to get through difficult situations and remain smoke free. Our emphasis is on behavioral and cognitive change. Class topics are prearranged but classes can be tailored to meet the specific concerns of group participants.

Success in these classes depends on the participant’s commitment to becoming smoke free, willingness to engage in the recommended activities, and for those who select it, ability to utilize nicotine replacement products.

Stop Smoking Aids

The program does not provide nicotine replacement products or medications, such as nicorette gum, the nicotine patch, or Zyban. However, a person with health care insurance, such as Medi-Cal or Blue Cross, can receive these withdrawal reducing products by enrolling in and actively participating in a behavior oriented smoking cessation class. The class facilitators will provide guidance in the procedures that must be followed to obtain these nicotine replacement aids.

Registration and Cost

Individuals may enroll in the program directly or be referred by a health care provider.
